Why
The purpose of a community network is the same as all networks.
It is a group of devices, such as computers and routers connected together in order to share information, resources and/or tasks.
When applied to a community the wireless network connects people and encourages communication and cooperation.
It encourages individuals to be more involved with their community and develop a sense of pride in community achievements.
While the internet is a great source of information generally, local content is often overlooked, and many people still cannot get or cannot afford internet access.
This is where community built and maintained networks can be beneficial.
The community network will create a local repository of knowledge and help bridge the "digital divide"
Wireless community networks have been very successful in the most remote regions all over the world, as well as the heaviest populated cities.
In Trinidad and Tobago although most homes have at least one computer, people have only just begun to discover the usefulness of wireless technology.
How
The network is user owned and operated. It aims to create a fully redundant wireless mesh network covering the community, which is open and available to all. There are no fees involved to connect. To connect, each person will create a node on the network by purchasing their own wireless equipment from a merchant of their choosing, or with our help.
Each node owner will own their own equipment, it will not be owned by Slingshot Wireless. Slingshot Wireless is an association of like minded people, who want to create an independent network between its users, free of the restrictions and cost of commercial providers. Slingshot Wireless network is like a local internet, where users provide their own content to share with whomever they choose.
Everyone on the community network is free to choose their own access to the Internet. Users may exchange any type of traffic between each other, including internet access. The network gives users the ability to make connections between each other at speeds many times faster than current commercial services, and complete freedom to run any application, so long as it does not interfere with other users.
